Genre: R&B, soul All I Have is the 2002 debut album from R&B singer Amerie Rogers, known simply under the mononym Amerie. This features one of the biggest hit songs of 2002, a track without a chorus, 'Why Don't We Fall In Love'. The CD was released on 30 July, 2002. Everybody I know likes the single 'Why Don't We Fall In Love'. Blige comparisions have been flying - due more to the music of that single moreso than her actual singing voice - and, having bobbed my head to a solid Mary track back in the day, I figured I'd take a risk with it. At the price they're selling it, I couldn't resist. Well, the album really soars and is easily one of the best R&B albums out so far this year (#3 by my list).

It accomplishes this by no less than 3 obvious methods: 1) Amerie can sing your lady's weave off 2) There's primarily 1 composer/producer - Rich Harrison - and he's a solid old-school-minded producer (circa 80s, when it was developing into a decidedly electronic yet still soulful phenomenon), so the album has a tight consistency and vision. 3) It draws from solid influences that were great the first time we heard them, but twists them into the new millenium enough to be original-sounding. And, when it comes down to it, she really does have Blige-sounding moments, except she's clearly a superior singer. And while Blige has moved beyond making records that tend to go where this one goes (unfortunately on some fronts, thankfully on others), but Amerie has stomped a mudhole firmly into the R&B world with this record and her talent. It's fun, clean stuff that, through tight and busy vocal arrangements and an eye on what works in R&B, you'll be listening to for a while. Definitely for fans of Mary, SWV and Brandy.

Ameriie’s second album, Touch, turned out to be a big deal for her as it proved that her first album had not been a fluke and managed to bypass the sophomore curse, but it also made it essential that she follow it up with something just as good (if not stronger).
As we stated before, Because I Love It is a great album, but it never got an American release. One of the reason (we feel) for that is because, despite her second album coming out less than a year earlier, she and her management decided to release a mixtape (or two, depending on where you live in the world) before the official release and name it the same thing and include the lead single. This likely led to some confusion about the album’s actually release date (another year later). While this kind of release schedule isn’t unusual overseas (or in the US for less well-known artists), it did turn off a lot of American listeners and led some people to ignore the actual album release.
While there are tracks consisting of refixes of other songs like Ludacris’ Money In The Bank and Money Maker and Shalamar’s Weekend Love, most of the set is original material. It’s also interesting to note that Take Control and an alternate version of Losing You are only tracks that appear on both this and the official album version.
This mixtape isn’t available too many places outside of Japan…for some reason. We’re making it available here because, well, it’s great. It’s an odd footnote that this is the only version many people remember of this era in the artist’s career, but it’s a testament to her abilities that it is one that people still enjoy.
